About Us

Established in 1988, Sockeye Cycle specializes in bicycle tours of Alaska, remote areas of Canada’s northwest British Columbia, and the Yukon.

The scenic splendor and cultural richness of our region has few rivals in the world. Our tours travel through landscapes carved out by glaciers, sculpted by rivers, and dominated by natural beauty. Join us beyond the beaten paths and experience our pristine northern wilderness.

Company History

In 1987 company founder Thom Ely moved to Haines full-time and bought an existing bike shop. Trek and Specialized bikes became the primary retail brands and Sockeye Cycle was born! In 1988 our first tours were offered in Haines, then in 1992 we expanded our business to the Northern Lynn Canal community of Skagway.

After 30 years in business, Thom sold Sockeye Cycle to General Manager and long-time employee Dustin Craney in 2019. Dustin and his partner Katie will continue operating the business with a focus on customer service, and a positive impact on the communities where we operate.

Today, we are the oldest operating full-service bicycle business in Alaska. We are proud of the high quality sales, service, rentals and tours that we provide in the communities of Haines and Skagway, and throughout the North. Our staff is always welcoming and ready to help you with all your cycling needs.

Sustainable Tourism

As a company that benefits from the natural beauty of our own backyard, we feel it is important to protect this environment for future generations. We strive to be good stewards of the sites we use, traveling lightly and leaving all natural areas as we found them. Our tours take place on traditional lands of the Tlinglit, Tagish, Tutchone, Han, Gwich’In, and Inupiaq People. Our tours visit First Nations educational and cultural centers to learn from and experience these vibrant living cultures firsthand.

The Alaska Conservation Foundation (ACF) has been a long-time partner in conservation and environmental advocacy. Through our water bottle donation program, we have raised thousands of dollars in donations for the ACF every year, and contribute to other conservation and local community-development organizations. In addition, we also work to support Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) on issues close to home.

We are certified with the Adventure Green Alaska Sustainable Tourism program, which recognizes tourism businesses practicing careful stewardship and working to sustain Alaska’s natural and cultural resources. Click below to learn more about the Alaska-based organizations we support.
