Summary:
The Haines Tour Operations Manager coordinates a range of bike trips throughout Alaska and Yukon. This position includes a variety of work including time spent on the bike, working in the field with tour equipment and logistics, and time in the office on the planning end.
This position oversees day tours with cruise ship based and other short-term visitors to Haines occurring a few days per week through the summer. Additionally, this position coordinates multi-day tour operations, which take place throughout Alaska and Yukon. The Operations Manager works with local hotels, guiding companies, restaurants, etc. to plan for these group tours. This position works closely with our Shop Manager and General Manager based in Haines, along with our Skagway team.
Main Responsibilities:
- Planning and logistics for a variety of tours: create tour schedules, make reservations and bookings required to support tour groups, keep organized timelines for departures.
- Communication by phone and email with both tour partners and customers related to scheduling, reservations, marketing/promotion, and general questions.
- Assist with hiring and oversee team of seasonal guides. Coordinate guide schedule to cover tour schedule.
- Guide and drive some tours to monitor tour quality and as needed.
- Tour equipment maintenance and improvements including vehicles, trailers, camping, cooking, and other tour support gear. Coordination with shop manager for bike maintenance.
- Tour development including scouting, mapping, developing, and promoting new offerings.
Ideal Experience and Skills:
- Experience with tour guiding, bike touring, group leading and facilitation, event planning & logistics, or similar.
- Management experience including hiring, training, scheduling, and oversight.
- Familiarity with computer programs including Microsoft Excel & Word, WordPress websites, Lightspeed POS, MacOS programs and organization, tour and rental booking software, some basic accounting.
- Understanding of bicycle mechanics and maintenance or interest to learn.
- Familiarity with tour equipment including Ford passenger vans, cargo and flatbed trailers, camping, cooking, communication, safety, and related equipment.
Schedule & Compensation:
During our operational season of April through September, the schedule is based around a 5-day work week and based in Haines, Alaska. Days off may shift from week to week and occasional travel and work outside of normal hours and days of the week is needed based on the tour schedule.
Between October and April, workload has some flexibility but generally averages 20 hours per week. Off-season work can be based in our Haines office or remote. There is also opportunity to arrange off-season schedule for significant/extended vacation time.
Base wage starts at $4000 per month full-time, with some variation based on agreed upon winter work schedule.
